羅素這本小書，篇篇談的都是大問題，篇篇好看。就中對基督教的剖析，更是可觀。他將基督教信仰置放在歷史的脈絡下，清楚地認識到，基督教談個人救贖，實受限於外在環境，不得不然：During the first three centuries of the Christian era the individuals who adopted Christianity could not alter the social or political institutions under which they lived . . . In these circumstances, it was natural that they should adopt the belief that an individual may be perfect in an imperfect world, and that the good life has nothing with this world. 這種思維，和柏拉圖的群體觀，大相逕庭：When Plato wanted to describe the good life, he described a whole community, not an individual; he did so in order to define justice, which is an essentially social conception (28). 對羅素來說，圓滿人生，奠基於群體，不是宗教個人主義能成就的： The good life must be lived in a good society, and is not fully possible otherwise (30).
